The Memorial Chapel

The Memorial Chapel

The Memorial Chapel is a beautiful small side chapel where we celebrate midweek communions and other smaller worship gatherings. It is always available for private prayer during the day when the building is open.

The Reredos (the wooden pannelling behind the communion table) shows the supper at Emmaus. It was donated by the Women’s Bible Class and The Mother’s Union in memory of Mrs Child, wife of Canon Child (Vicar at St Helens Parish Church from 1925-1937). The inscription on it reads “and their eyes were opened and they knew him” and the story depicted is in Luke’s gospel chapter 24. You can read it here. The oak panelling in the chapel was donated by the Wilkinson Family in memory of Catherine Wilkinson who died in 1889.

The Bell Tower is accessed by stairs from near the chapel, but is not open to the public. The bells are a peal of ten and were relocated from St Peter’s Church in Liverpool (the Pro Cathedral).

On the outside wall behind the Chapel is the foundation stone, it is made from Eccleston Hill sandstone and was laid by the Bishop of Liverpool. Inscribed with the letters A. M. D. G. standing for Ad Majoram Dei Gloriam - To the greater glory of God. The foundation stone was laid in 1920, and the completed church was consecrated on 10th November 1926.
